He has now fled Australia and is undergoing medical treatment in his native India.

“They entice us to come to Australia saying all its good points - but what kind of a world-class city cannot ensure the safety of ordinary people?” Mr Kharbanda told the Indus Age paper for expats.

Asif Valji, 19, and Vijay Maddineni, 22, multimedia students at Cambridge International College in the city, also say they are victims of racist assaults and thefts.

From the Warrnambool Chronicle:

Youth guilty of race attack
Shane Fowles

A TEENAGER who assaulted a restaurateur in a racially-fuelled gang attack was yesterday placed on a community-based order.

Joshua Ladd, 18, of Morack Avenue, Warrnambool, yesterday pleaded guilty to eight charges stemming from a range of incidents over the past month.

He had spent four days in custody, having been arrested on Monday for stealing shoes from a department store and possessing a dangerous article.

The court heard that Ladd’s run of offences started on April 11 when the teen and two friends banged on the doors of China City restaurant in Koroit Street, Warrnambool.

Shouting abusive and racist remarks, they were confronted by a male owner who told them to leave.

A grossly drunk Ladd and the others began punching the defenceless victim to his head and upper body, before the man fled up Koroit Street.

Call for Vic Pol hate crimes unit

From the Herald Sun:

Hate crimes require special unit
Dvir Abramovich
April 29, 2008

SWASTIKAS smeared across a synagogue and a Jewish restaurant and obscene graffiti painted at an Islamic college.

A Jewish teenager is hit with a baseball bat and a Jewish father is punched in front of his children.

A Sudanese-born youth is viciously attacked by a gang; rocks and eggs are hurled at Hindu devotees at a temple in Carrum Downs; Indian taxi drivers in Geelong are bashed; threatening letters and e-mails are received by ethnic organisations; windows are smashed at a kosher bakery.

This is not a list from Europe or the US. These events took place in Victoria over the last year. Clearly, racially motivated violence is dramatically on the rise.

April 13, 2008

AN acclaimed Melbourne restaurant has sparked multi-ethnic outrage for paying homage to a fascist warlord and mass murderer.

The plush Katarina Zrinski restaurant attached to Footscray’s Croatian Club has been branded “disgusting” for its celebration of genocidal World War II Croatian leader Ante Pavelic.

Pavelic, who historians say was responsible for the deaths of up to 500,000 Jews, Serbs, Muslims and gypsies, has been described as the Heinrich Himmler of the Croatian nation.

The popular restaurant during the week displayed a big portrait of Pavelic on its wall and T-shirts depicting Pavelic for sale at the bar.

By Michelle Draper
March 11, 2008

MEMBERS of a Hindu temple in Melbourne’s south are worried about escalating attacks on worshippers by groups of teenagers, who have been terrorising devotees and vandalising property.

The board of the Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple in Carrum Downs has complained to Victoria Police after the incidents worsened.

In one of the more serious incidents, a devotee who chased a group of teenagers away after they attempted to steal monetary offerings from the temple was pelted with beer bottles.

In another incident about one month ago, teenagers put a padlock onto the main gate, locking out worshippers arriving for an important function.

Temple authorities were forced to cut off the padlock to let in the worshippers, who had been told by the teenagers the event was not going ahead.

Doin’ it for the kids!

So, it appears that — judging by the comments left by a handful of upset punters — the Starlight Children’s Foundation eventually decided not to accept the funds generated by the benefit gig at The Birmingham Hotel on February 9. Or then again, maybe it will.

Who knows?
