Nazi accused loses
May 31, 2007AN accused Nazi war criminal has failed to avoid extradition proceedings while an appeal goes to the High Court.
Hungary wants to try Charles Zentai, 84, over allegations he tortured and murdered a Jewish teenager in Budapest during World War II.
Mr Zentai appeared in the Perth Magistrates’ Court yesterday after an unsuccessful Federal Court challenge that had temporarily halted extradition proceedings begun in 2005.

Mr Zentai has lodged an application for special leave to appeal after the Federal Court twice rejected his argument that magistrates did not have the power to extradite him.
Mr Zentai, 85, is next due to appear in the Perth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where it is expected extradition proceedings will continue.

April 17, 2007EXTRADITION proceedings against Charles Zentai will resume after the accused Nazi war criminal lost an appeal to the full bench of the Federal Court yesterday.
The 85-year-old Hungarian man has been fighting efforts by the Hungarian Government to extradite him from Perth since he was arrested in July 2005.
He faces a charge of murdering an 18-year-old man in Budapest during World War II.

November 30, 2006THE Federal Court has ordered a stay of extradition proceedings against alleged Nazi war criminal Charles Zentai until an appeal is heard by the full bench next year.
Hungary wants to extradite Mr Zentai, 84, who has denied its allegations he tortured and murdered 18-year-old Jewish man Peter Balazs in Budapest while serving in the army during World War II.
His extradition hearing was due to proceed in Perth Magistrates Court earlier this year but Mr Zentai - in tandem with alleged Irish fraudster Vincent O’Donoghue - initiated a federal court challenge.

Charles Zentai, 84, has denied torturing and murdering 18-year-old Jewish man Peter Balazs in Budapest while serving in the army of Hitler’s wartime ally, Hungary.
His extradition was due to be proceed in the Perth Magistrates Court earlier this year but Zentai - in tandem with alleged Irish fraudster Vincent O’Donoghue - initiated a Federal Court challenge against the power of West Australian magistrates to deal with Commonwealth extradition laws.

September 12, 2006ACCUSED war criminal Charles Zentai must face an extradition hearing over his alleged involvement in the fatal beating of a teenage Jew in 1944, the Federal Court of Australia has ruled.
Mr Zentai, 84, today lost a court challenge to the authority of magistrates to hear the matter.
The retired mental health nurse, whom family members say is in failing health, was not present in court today.

THEY live 30 minutes’ drive from one another in suburban Melbourne. One is a Jewish refugee from the nightmare of World War II Hungary, the other a former officer of the regime that tortured her.
The story 82-year-old Susanne Nozick has to tell is the new evidence that could bring 89-year-old Lajos Polgar to a war crimes trial, 61 years after the disgraceful events she describes.
Mrs Nozick was 19 and in hiding at Budapest’s Charity Hospital, in the final months of World War II, when she was detained by soldiers and taken with her mother to the notorious House of Loyalty, the headquarters of the dreaded Hungarian fascist organisation Arrow Cross. There she was forced to watch as her mother was raped and brutally beaten.
