Lest We Forget (Australia’s shameful role in hiding war criminals)

From the Oz:

No refuge for war criminals

THE High Court decision this week upholding the power of state courts to hear extradition cases under federal law pushes Hungarian Karoly (Charles) Zentai one step closer to a historic hearing at the scene of his alleged war crimes.

The case against Zentai implicates him in the killing of a Jewish civilian during the Nazi occupation of Budapest in 1944 and indicates that he took part in the systematic persecution of Jews. This reminds us yet again of the 50,000 Australian casualties in the fight against Hitler’s criminal regime, who are among the hundreds of thousands of heroes we celebrate every year on Anzac Day.

High Court grants Zentai leave for appeal

From the ABC:

High Court says accused Nazi war criminal can appeal against extradition
September 3, 2007

A Perth man accused of committing war crimes during the World War 11 has been granted leave to appeal to the High Court against his extradition to Hungary.

Hungarian authorities want to extradite Charles Zentai for allegedly murdering a Jewish teenager in 1944, when he was in the Hungarian army.

The Federal Court in Perth previously dismissed the 84-year-old’s appeal.

The High Court in Canberra this morning granted Mr Zentai special leave for an appeal to be heard.

Mr Zentai’s son Ernie Stenier says he and his father are relieved by the decision.

Mr Stenier says his father’s health is deteriorating, so it is likely he will stay in Perth when the appeal is heard.

“The appeal in the High Court as far as we know is the final level of appeal or we have to ultimately make an appeal to the Minister for Justice,” he said.
