Neo-Nazi arsonists shouldn’t drive

From the Mackay Daily Mercury:

Man on parole for arson finds himself back in jail
By BRUCE MCKEAN

ONE of two men involved in the arson of Candlestick Park was back in jail yesterday for breaching his parole. Paul Nicholson, who is now 20, was arrested for drink driving (0.185%) and driving while disqualified on Wood Street on Melbourne Cup night.

He was a prisoner on parole at the time and, under parole conditions, he must go to jail for 28 days while a report is made to determine if his parole should be permanently or partly revoked.

Nicholson and Luke Devereux, 21, were involved in the arson of Candlestick Park in 2007 in which $350,000 damage was caused to the basketball stadium.

The arson was part of a crime spree in which racist remarks were sprayed on walls, a cross was sprayed over an aboriginal flag, a swastika was painted on walls and “get out of town” was painted on walls. The arson was caused by tipping over two wheelie bins, ripping posters off a notice
board, putting a gas cylinder in the bin and setting it alight.

Nicholson was jailed for three years, to be released after serving six months, and was disqualified from driving for 18 months, when he appeared
in the District Court in Mackay on November 8 last year on a charge of arson. Nicholson is under the supervision of a probation officer until November 7, 2010.

In the Mackay Magistrate’s Court yesterday he entered no pleas to drink-driving and disqualified driving and his case was adjourned to December 17. Duty lawyer John Aberdeen told the court that Nicholson now faced 28 more days in prison pending a parole review.
