From the Monash Journal:
Self-proclaimed racist kicked out of party
Kirsten LeimingerA MULGRAVE Ward council election candidate has been expelled from political party One Nation for having views that were “too extreme” for the party.
Neil Henry Smith, who ran as a self-proclaimed racist candidate in recent state and federal elections, has put his hand up for both the November council elections and the 2010 federal election. Despite being disendorsed by One Nation, he has hand-delivered up to 3000 handbills with the party logo in the federal electorate of Bruce, calling for a “100 years moratorium on coloured immigration”.
On October 25, the political party, which insists it does not support his views, expelled and disendorsed Mr Smith for attempting to “bring the party into disrepute with unauthorised handbills”. One Nation has threatened further legal action if he does not stop delivering the handbills.Mr Smith, who still describes himself as “racist”, said he would continue to deliver the handbills in the lead-up to both elections. “I’m not particularly worried because I don’t take the expulsion as having any meaning; I’ll challenge it. Until they come up with a little bit more than that. I still
consider myself a member,” he said.“I’ll still keep going using One Nation as my banner because I like One Nation and Pauline [Hanson].” A draft of his candidate’s statement states he will “aggressively reject” council funding being channelled into programs for immigrants. One Nation state secretary Pat Loy
said the flyers were deemed by the party to be racist and slanderous and they were never authorised by the executive.Ms Loy said Mr Smith was refused endorsement for the 2010 federal election by the party.
If he continued to deliver the handbills “we will get a restraining order on him from the court”, she said. “We’ve worked so hard to remove this racist tag and then [someone] like this comes along. We are not a racist party and we are disgusted with the points made on the flyer. We want people to come to this country who will assimilate. We don’t care the colour of their skin.”
