From the AJN:
Club finally acts on Nazi-attired patron
Yoni BashanA SWASTIKA-WEARING club patron has finally been refused entry to a north coast recreation club, after initial complaints to bar staff about his attire fell on deaf ears.
The Grafton District Services Club tightened its patron regulations after a man donning three swastikas on a T-shirt was spotted inside the club earlier this month.
A Jewish couple dining at the venue blew the whistle on the club in a letter to the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. But it took a letter from a Jewish couple dining at the venue to the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies before the club tightened its regulations.
“What has our country come to if such a blatant disregard for the suffering endured by millions is accepted?” the letter stated.
The club’s general manager, Arthur Lysaught, was quick to apologise “to all concerned” over the debacle.
“The visitor wearing the offensive clothing should have been asked to leave immediately,” he said, adding that formal policy had been drafted to deal with any future episodes.
“When a swastika is brazenly worn in public, it sends a chilling message that the concepts it represents - race hatred and genocide are endorsed,” Board of Deputies CEO Vic Aihadeff told the AJN.
“We therefore applaud the club’s swift and decisive response … to prevent a recurrence.” It is understood the same man has aleady been refused entry on at least one subsequent occasion since the incident occurred.
