From the Ballarat Courier:
Man drew swastikas with blood: police
25/1/2007A MAN drew swastikas in blood on his cell wall after being arrested for assaulting police, a court heard yesterday.
Fuelled by his anger at the world, Allan Gunn also punched and headbutted the doors and walls, threw his property and was rude to officers.
Yesterday, a much calmer Gunn pleaded guilty at Ballarat Magistrates Court to assaulting police, resisting police, willfully damaging property, and using obscene language in a public place.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Clint Prebble said the 52-year-old committed the offences in the early hours of September 8 last year.Sen Const Prebble said police attended Gunn’s address after a complaint about
loud music in his neighbourhood. After slamming his door in their faces, Gunn re-opened the door, took out his false teeth, threw their to the ground and grabbed an officer by the jumper. Gunn suffered minor cuts to his face during a wrestle outside his unit, while a female officer received bruising to her knee and a sore finger.
The court heard police took the defendant to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital, where he abused a doctor and refused treatment.
Sen Const Prebble said Gunn was then lodged in a cell at the Ballarat Police Station, where events culminated with the defendant drawing swastikas with his own blood.
Defence lawyer Michael Hennessy said his client was sorry for his behaviour, and “understood that police had better things to do than come to an incident like this when they could have been needed elsewhere”.
He said Gunn, who has a psychiatric disorder, had been drinking at the time, stopped his medication, and was upset after receiving abusive text messages from his ex-partner.
Magistrate Bernard Coburn agreed that police have got a lot better things to do than attend Mr Gunn’s premises for loud music and get the kind of response they received”. Gunn, of Ballarat, received a 12-month good behaviour bond with conviction and must pay $250 to the court fund and $200 compensation.
