BBQs in Brunswick

From The Islamic Information and Support Centre of Australia:

heme: Uniting Australia
Sausage Sizzle with the wider community
Date: 9th of December, Saturday
Time: 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Venue: 19 Michael St, Brunswick

We would like to extend an open invitation to join the community of Moreland city in a “sausage sizzle to stand up against racism and sexual assault. Our wonderful state prides itself on the diverse cultures, ethnic communities all living and working harmoniously together. Our organization has coordinated with the Moreland city council and other community groups a “get together, appropriately titled “Uniting Australia.

The purpose of the event is to break down barriers and show appreciation for the community support in solidarity, received from the people of Moreland and greater Melbourne. The event is open to the general public and all are welcome.

The event has been organized due to the overwhelming support from both the Muslim and non-Muslim community in light of the planned ‘Bikini march’ which was to coincide with the anniversary of the Cronulla riots in Sydney. This march has since been cancelled. Despite this, we have decided to continue with the community gathering. The event will be very helpful in building community relationships.

The Moreland Council is fully supportive of this event and has given a permit for it to go ahead.

We look forward to meeting you on this day and thank you for your support in making this a great afternoon for all. Please contact our office if you should have any queries.

Racist drive-bys in Auckland

From One News:

Racism flares in West Auckland
Dec 5, 2006

Three Muslim women in West Auckland have reportedly been the target of violent racial attacks over the past 10 days, and there is a concern that many more victims are not contacting authorities.

On Saturday, the women were shot at while waiting at a bus stop.

The bullets fired from a car shattered the glass they were sitting beside - and the women believe the men only stopped firing because they ran out of bullets.

The women are now too scared to be identified, fearing a revenge attack.

Racist assault in Wellington

From the Dom Post:

Attack, slurs were racial, says victim
05 December 2006

A New Zealand-born Chinese man who was set upon and taunted by eight attackers in a Wellington street believes his assault was racially motivated.

Ken Young has a black eye after being confronted by a gang of seven men and a woman in Tory St about midnight on Saturday. Members of the group yelled “bloody Asian” during the attack, he said.

Mr Young reported the assault to police, but believed he would not have been attacked if he had been white. “There was no provocation, no reason. If I was European I wouldn’t have been attacked.”

Mr Young said he was shoulder- charged and then punched twice by two attackers as he walked along the street alone. After the second punch he fell to the ground, but was able to get up and run to safety.

Mr Young said his cousin had also been the victim of an unprovoked racial attack.

National Party MP Patsy Wong said it was important that victims of racial abuse reported it to authorities.

Toben defies court

From the Sunday Mail:

Race-hate site defies court
December 03, 2006

A RACE-HATE website operating from Adelaide has sparked a furious reaction from Australia’s top Jewish body.

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry is considering further legal action against Dr Fredrick Toben, 62, from Wattle Park, who runs the Adelaide Institute website.

Dr Toben was the subject of a Federal Court directive in 2002 preventing the publication of material that vilified Jews.

Despite the court ordering him to remove such material from his website, anti-Jewish articles are still accessible from the site.

White supremacists to rally in Lakemba?

From the Sun-Herald:

Mosque to get police guard for bikini rally

Taghred Chandab and Matthew Benns
December 3, 2006

POLICE have been asked to protect Australia’s largest mosque next weekend because of concerns that a bikini march staged to coincide with the anniversary of the Cronulla riots may get out of control.

The caretaker of Lakemba Mosque, the Lebanese Muslim Association, says it is taking no risks, requesting at least 32 police officers to protect the place of worship on Saturday and Sunday.

Association president Tom Zreik said he met police on several occasions to ensure there would be adequate numbers of officers present to defuse problems and arrest troublemakers.

152 years of multiculturalism and counting

Today marks the 152nd anniversary of the Eureka Stockade. According to Australian neo-Nazis, the Eureka Stockade represents the birth of white supremacy in Australia.

Pity the rebelling miners were such a diverse mob.

Here’s a list of those brought to trial by the government over their part in the stockade:

Timothy Hayes, Chairman of the Ballarat Reform League,
James McFie Campbell a black man from Kingston Jamaica
Raffaello Carboni, an Italian and trusted lieutenant in charge of the diggers who spoke European languages
Jacob Sorenson, a Jew
John Manning, a Ballarat Times journalist, from Ireland
John Phelan, a friend and business partner of Peter Lalor, from Ireland
Thomas Dignum, born in Sydney,
John Joseph, a black American from New York
James Beattie, from Ireland
William Molloy, from Ireland
Jan Vannick, from Holland,
Michael Tuohy, from Ireland
Henry Reid, a guy whose ethnicity and nationality has been lost to the sands of time

We’re not sure that mob realised they were actually making a stand for the White race. Or perhaps modern Australian racists are just very, very confused about what they stand for.

From The Age:

Eureka: where multiculturalism was born
December 3, 2006

150 years ago miners from several nations joined forces to fight for a fair go, writes Kate Hagan.

THINK Eureka Stockade and people also tend to think “birthplace of Australian democracy”. Images of Irish-led rebels challenging English authority immediately spring to mind. For the director of the Eureka Centre in Ballarat, Ron Egeberg, it was also the birthplace of multiculturalism. Miners of 20 nationalities took part in the stockade, in a list that is still growing as descendants provide details of their cultural backgrounds to historians.

ACMA impotent on hate sites

From the Age:

Plea to lawmakers: close down hate sites
Paul Heinrichs
December 3, 2006

THE Federal Government is being urged to make laws that allow the removal of hate material and racial vilification from Australian-based websites.

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), a Jewish human rights body, wants the change after failing to have limits placed on the website www.missionislam.com through appeals to politicians and use of existing legal channels.

The site, run by the Muslim Information Service in Sydney, is an extensive resource and link system aimed at influencing young Muslims, and points them to extreme views and well-known anti-Semitic material.

Some of the material would also be offensive to Christians and Freemasons.

Anti-semitic attacks on the rise in 06

From the Oz:

Rise in attacks on Jews tests forgiveness
Jill Rowbotham and Dorothy Illing
November 29, 2006

KNOWING first-hand how it feels to be the subject of an anti-Semitic attack, Menachem Vorchheimer still adopts a forgiving attitude, or as he says, is “polite about it”.

The softly spoken Melbourne businessman, an orthodox Jew, was walking along a street in his East St Kilda neighbourhood one Saturday in October with two of his young children when drunken football fans in a minibus first verbally abused him. One then punched him in the face.

Attacks such as the one on Mr Vorchheimer reached a record high of 156 in the year to the end of September, according to a new report to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

The category of “attacks” includes abuse such as arson and vandalism, while “threats” include threats via telephone, leaflets, posters or email.

The combined total was 442, including the vandalising of synagogues, a Jewish university student being spat on and worshippers leaving a synagogue being pelted with eggs.

Racial abuse: not financially viable

Some Australian companies think that racist abuse in the workplace is not their problem. This story proves that it is.

From the Daily Tele:
