However the MCC is not following the lead of Queensland Cricket, which will ban backpacks in the first Test at the Gabba for security reasons and try to stop people bringing hidden alcohol into the ground.

The MCG’s general manager of event operations, Trevor Dohnt, said he did not support similar bans in Melbourne where security checks on baggage had been successful in recent years, but final security plans were still being negotiated.

“We do full bag checks at the ground and the content of backpacks has not been perceived as a problem,” he said.

Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland hopes the increased security measures will stamp out anti-social, racist and drunken conduct.

“In its most simplest form our message is this: we want cricket fans to come and enjoy their day at the cricket, whether from around the corner or around the world — to enjoy it and have fun.

“But if their definition of fun spoils the comfort and enjoyment of others then we will be asking them to leave.”

Mr Sutherland said the measures were produced in concert with security specialists, police, venue managers and state cricket associations.

Since several incidents of racism marred last summer’s series against South Africa, Cricket Australia has adopted the ICC’s anti-racism guidelines and will enforce a zero-tolerance approach.

“The critical thing is the context in which these sort of words are used,” Mr Sutherland said. “Most people are pretty well versed about the proper context to use them, and I am sure that people will get it right.”

Suzanne Rutland and her colleague Sol Encel, of the University of Sydney’s department of Hebrew, biblical and Jewish studies, will present the findings of their study today.

They will also show the board game, which Professor Rutland said was sold from Lakemba mosque.

“I think we have a real problem with the new racism towards Muslims and Jews,” she said.

Islamophobia had heightened after the gulf wars, the September 11 attacks and the Cronulla riots. During the second intifada and Lebanese wars, Jews also came under attack.

“Lebanese Muslim Australians have become alienated because of anti-Muslim sentiments expressed by politicians and in the media,” Professor Rutland said.

Teachers had complained that they felt they received little support in combating worsening racism.

“The Department of Education needs to take a much more proactive approach in combating racism,” Professor Rutland said.

A three-pronged approach that showed teachers how to act when they encountered racism and provided education for pupils and their parents was also needed.

“The schools have to be the starting ground,” Professor Rutland said. “These teachers have no support.”

Professor Rutland said that while Muslim youths in Sydney had been studied, there had been little attention given to the rise in anti-Semitism in schools.

She said Jewish Australians were under attack from older neo-Nazi and left-wing groups, demonstrated in recent attacks on Jewish students at the University of Sydney.

“In terms of Judeophobia, there is a problem of stereotypical attitudes among Muslim children,” she said. “The children are making statements like Hitler did the right thing.

“One Jewish teacher said [the children] were too frightened to come out. I interviewed one parent who had to remove their children from a western Sydney school because of anti-Semitism.”

A spokeswoman for the Department of Education said racism was not tolerated in government schools.

All schools were required to have a designated anti-racism officer and anti-racism strategies.

“While our teachers and other school staff are working very hard to make sure all students treat each other with respect, these positive efforts must be reinforced both in home and the wider community,” the spokeswoman said.
