Bizarrely, some of the dimmer lights in the Australian racist right tried to paint this as an attack by non-whites on whites… even after it was clear that it was the other way around.

Bashed victims speak out

IT was meant to be a reunion barbecue of 13 school friends from Bankstown Grammar School, to farewell one of the group who had got a job interstate.
Yesterday, two of the friends relived how the gathering was targeted in a horrific racial bashing at the beachside suburb of Maroubra on Friday night.

Martin, 21, Australian-born and of Vietnamese descent, said he had been to the park for barbecues before without any trouble.

But he said Friday night’s incident was the first time he had been racially abused in public.

Martin, who asked that his surname be withheld, told The Daily Telegraph he and 12 friends – male, female and a mix of Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian and Caucasian backgrounds – had driven in four cars to Maroubra’s beachside reserve off Marine Pde.

One of the young women had just got a transfer to an IT job in Brisbane and they were celebrating her farewell.

Martin said about 20 Caucasian youths, aged from about 13 to 21, appeared out of the direction of a bushland area next to a skate park.

“It started off with my car first,” he said. “I had some chips in the back of the car . . . and they said ‘give us the chips’,” he said.

“I took the chips and walked back to the barbecue area and then I saw Sid (one of his friends) saying to them ‘what’s the problem here?’,” Martin said.

The youths began punching Sid and his male friends.

“I saw they bashed one of my other friends down and then they punched Sid,” Martin said.

He then got into his station wagon with a male and a female friend and tried to get away, Martin said.

“They threw me out of the car, they dragged me out of the car and beat down on me,” he said.

The group of Caucasians choked one of their male friends, who has haemophilia and suffered internal bleeding. Another male was punched and had his teeth smashed in.

The girl whose farewell it was was punched twice in the face and hit in the arm with a brick, which was smashed into her new Porsche.

All three were treated in hospital.

The mob also spat at a number of other young women in the group.

“They said: ‘Get the f. . . out of the area, do you know this is our area, you filthy f. . .ing Asians’,” Martin said.

Sid, 21, who is Indian born and has lived in Australia since 1991, said he suffered bruising to his face and jaw.

He said he was worried about ever returning to the park and appealed for anyone who knew who the attackers were to come forward.

“I just want to make sure that doesn’t happen to anyone else,” he said.
