Zentai case adjourned

From The Age:

Zentai extradition proceedings adjourned
September 22, 2006

Extradition proceedings against a Perth man accused of being a Nazi war criminal were adjourned.

Charles Zentai, 84, appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court facing extradition proceedings that he be sent back to Hungary, where he is alleged to have murdered Jewish teenager Peter Balazs in 1944.

Zentai has denied the allegations brought against him by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, an international Jewish human rights organisation, and has been fighting the extradition.

A date for an extradition hearing was expected to be set on Friday after Zentai lost a Federal Court challenge last month.

Zentai - in tandem with Irish fraudster Vincent O’Donoghue - initiated a Federal Court challenge against the power of West Australian magistrates to deal with commonwealth extradition laws.

Zentai’s lawyer Michael Bowden told the court an appeal against the Federal Court’s ruling had been lodged on Thursday.

Chief Magistrate Steven Heath adjourned the matter until December 11.

However, Magistrate Heath said unless he received a stay from the Federal Court by that date, he would set the matter down for a hearing.
