The Last Boot

Phillip Adams sinks a final boot into the fetid corpse of Eric Butler in the Weekend Oz’s magazine:

When Eric Butler died recently I was not among his mourners, regarding it as calamitous that he was ever horn.

For more than 60 years this most repulsive of creatures spread his poison in our political life.

Bondi Troubles

With everything going on in the Middle East, it was not unexpected that people (including us) would jump to the conclusion that the stabbing of an Israeli might be related.

The revelation that the death is more likely a local issue, while still terrible, brings with it a sense of relief: Thank goodness things have not escalated this far in Australia that people are being killed in the streets over a war thousands of kilometres away.

That said, it was not an unreasonable conclusion to jump to: In addition to the multiple attacks on Synagogues around Australia in the last few weeks, there have been brutal Nazi Skinhead assaults on Orthodox Jews earlier in the year, and Australia First members have admitted to sieg heiling a Rabbi from their car as they hooned past.

Cool heads

You would have to have been living on another planet (or Greymouth) to not have picked up the vibe across Australia and New Zealand that things have been a bit tetchy of late between our respective Jewish and Muslim communities.

Firstly, the kidnapping of a Palestinian doctor in Gaza and the subsquent kidnapping of Israeli soldiers by Hamas (draws breath) and then the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers by Hizbollah (draws another breath) and then the absolute bombing to buggery of Lebanese civillians and infrastracture (with a handful of Hizbollah guerillas brought down as well) by the Israeli military.

Aotearoa Jews for Justice

The ball is rolling.

Aotearoa Jews For Justice Speaks Out Against Israel

Aotearoa Jews For Justice stands in solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people suffering at the hands of the Israeli army. We also stand with those Israelis who are challenging the illegal and war-mongering actions of the Israeli state in Palestine and now in Lebanon.

We are part of a growing global movement of Jews who feel that it is our duty to oppose the atrocities being committed by the Israeli government in our name. Israel has never and will never represent us.

Reaching out

A joint statement from NZ’s Jewish and Muslim community leaders gives us all a bit of heart:

The New Zealand Jewish Council and the Federation of Islamic Associations of
New Zealand issued the following joint statement today:

In the wake of recent attacks on a mosque in Lower Hutt and a synagogue in Christchurch, New Zealand Muslims and Jews stand together against racism and vandalism. We are all dismayed by the current turmoil in the Middle East, but we pray and work for a lasting peace daily. We have no desire to bring foreign hatred to New Zealand’s shores - we only want to live peaceably with our neighbours. The vandals and bigots are a tiny but vocal minority, and we know that our many friends are ashamed of such acts occuring in New Zealand.

Racism ain’t cheap

From The Age:

‘Bombchucker’ taunt costs company $25,000

MOHAMED Abdulrahman’s first name was too difficult for his colleagues, so they called him “bombchucker” instead.

The Toll Express employees pretended to stumble over the public address system calling him “Mokaakaakaahamed” and found another tag they could pronounce: Osama bin Laden. Mr Abdulrahman, who drove forklifts and stacked trucks, was told to change his name to John or David or “whatever”.

In a meeting about a work injury, a union delegate told him: “F—ing bombchucker … what do you think, you want to go home with $1 million and chuck bombs around Australia?” Everyone in the room laughed, except Mr Abdulrahman.

Bondi Youth Centre Attack

From the Oz:

Jewish youth centre attacked
August 02, 2006

A JEWISH youth centre in Sydney has been targeted in an attack community leaders say is clearly linked to the war between Israel and Hezbollah.

It is the second anti-Semitic attack in Sydney in four days.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive Vic Alhadeff said today attackers had failed in their bid to set alight the Jewish youth movement centre, adjacent to the Mizrachi Synagogue on Old South Head Road at Bondi.

Investigations had shown the assailants intended to cause much greater damage, dousing wooden blocks inside the building with gasoline and trying to set them alight.

Christchurch Synagogue Attack

From the New Zealand Herald:

Motives for synagogue vandalism ‘uncertain’
Wednesday August 2, 2006
By Jarrod Booker

Vandals have targeted a Christchurch synagogue with anti-semitic graffiti apparently triggered by the Middle East conflict, but a New Zealand Jewish leader says it is uncertain what motivated the attack.

Slogans such as “Filthy Pigs” and “Shower you murderous swine” were scrawled in green paint under cover of darkness and were discovered on the pavement outside the fence yesterday morning.
