Nazi vandal attack in WA

Mosque attack seen as misguided

The Geraldton Muslim community in mid-west Western Australia believes a graffiti attack on the city’s mosque is due to people with the wrong idea about their religion.

Earlier this week, vandals spray painted Nazi symbols on the walls of the mosque, which generally has between 50 to 60 people for Friday prayers.

Assistant Imam Daftie Qudus says some people do not understand that Muslims here believe in keeping politics and religion separate.

“It’s completely different, it’s very wrong to put religion into politics to start with and we’ve always been in line with that, so I think the ones that are causing the problem are the ones that have a problem,” he said.

THE tirade by Sydney nutty professor Andrew Fraser against Africans driving up the crime rate has lead to an outpouring from Rain Pryor, daughter of gag legend Richard.

In town for the comedy festival, Rain has invited Andy to her show and left two tickets at the Athenaeum box office. There will also be a drink voucher for Rain to shake up an exotic African cocktail for Andy.

No rainchecks.

White supremacists Jack van Tongeren and Matthew Billing have refused to reveal details to police of their six weeks on the run or the location of their bush hideaway, leading to fears that it may be home to a cache of weapons.

Their fugitive lifestyle ended on Wednesday night when they were arrested by heavily armed officers from the tactical response group at Boddington, 130km south-east of Perth.

WHITE supremacist leader Jack van Tongeren and his sidekick were allegedly found with three rifles when police ended their six-week stint on the run.

The 58-year-old founder of the Australian Nationalists Movement was downcast yesterday during a brief appearance in Perth Magistrates Court with his co-accused, 22-year-old Matthew Billing.

Mr van Tongeren, a Vietnam veteran, had been living rough with Mr Billing at a campsite near the mining town of Boddington, 130km southeast of Perth, when tactical response group officers pounced on Tuesday night.

The pair’s campsite contained rations, binoculars and night-vision goggles and they had a shopping list with food items written on it.

Their arrest at a house in Boddington ended a nationwide manhunt and was yesterday welcomed by West Australian Attorney-General Jim McGinty. “The whole community can breathe a sigh of relief,” he said.
