Race riot email a ‘joke’
By SAM RICHES
16dec05POLICE have described as a practical joke an email written by a senior police officer claiming that race violence planned for Glenelg tonight “was more than a rumour”.
Assistant Commissioner Tony Harrison said yesterday the email was a form of “practical joke or hoax” by the officer, whom he refused to name.
The email was circulated when text messages inciting hatred and violence were being distributed around the country.
Police in other capital cities have issued similar warnings, and assaults and property damage in SA this week have been linked to the campaign of racism sparked by this week’s Sydney riots.
The email says: “Glenelg might be a good place to stay away from or at least be vigilant as to any tensions in the area . . . There has also been a call for people to make Friday ‘Bash-a-Muslim’ day”. Mr Harrison said the information had been “constructed by a police officer who did not have the full story.”
He would not say if the officer in question had been spoken to or if the matter would be investigated further. He had been monitoring information and events in SA and interstate since the racially-inspired violence in Sydney last weekend.
“To date, there is no information whatsoever to suggest there is a co-ordinated approach to gathering people to meet at any particular location for any particular inappropriate behaviour that we’re aware of,” he said.
But he confirmed there had been “isolated incidents that have been loosely connected to racial conflict”.
On Tuesday, two men were stabbed outside the Torrens Arms Hotel during a brawl involving about 10 men.
One man was stabbed in the back, and the other was slashed across an arm. In a separate incident, the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club was broken into and vandalised.
Police have said they would increase police resources around the metropolitan area from last night and during the weekend.
“We think that’s an appropriate response as a result of our information and as a result of offences which occurred in NSW in the last couple of days,” Mr Harrison said.
“The person that was responsible for the email didn’t have all of the best information . . . and I can categorically say there is no reason for members of the public not to go about their normal business,” he said.
