Mosque attackers off to jail

Word just through from Manukau District Court in Auckland.

Ross Baumgarten and Jason M the former National Front youth rep and webmaster respectively, have just been sentenced to one year and seven months in jail. They both received one year for the Mosque attacks and seven months for the firearms charges. The sentences are to be served concurrently, and the pair have both been granted leave to apply for home detention.

More information as it filters in, including a thorough description of the look on Jason M’s face as the judge read out the sentence.

UPDATE

In addition to the sentence mentioned yesterday, both Ross and Jason must also pay $5000 to the Mosques they attacked. This payment will be at $20 per week starting 21 days after they are released from jail.

While in the dock, Jason and Ross barely looked at each other or acknowledged the other’s existance. The only time there was any contact was when the Judge mentioned that Jason had written a full confession implicating Ross and thus had helped with the case against Ross - on hearing this, Ross looked at Jason but Jason simply kept his head down and looked away.

The Crown prosecutor was originally aiming for two years for the Mosque attacks, however the Judge decided to cut the sentance to 1 year owing to Jason and Ross’ young age and seeming remorse for their actions.
