The man accused of the rape and murder of Wanganui barmaid Tania McKenzie appeared in Wanganui District Court yesterday.

Shane Daniel Randle, 26, unemployed, of Wanganui is accused of raping, sexually violating and murdering Tania Rebecka McKenzie on January 7.

Randle appeared before Judge Patrick Mahony and was escorted into the dock by police detectives.

He wore a grey singlet which revealed heavily tattooed arms covered in Celtic designs and other patterns.
The left side of his neck sported a swastika and the letters SS were tattooed at the top of his chest.

He was composed throughout the brief appearance, staring straight ahead or at supporters in the public gallery.\
Randle faces four charges which court charge sheets detail in full.

As well as charges of murder and rape, Randle is accused of sexually violating Tania by anal penetration with his penis. He is also charged with sexually violating her by anal penetration using parts of his body or an object.

No application for name suppression was made by lawyers Peter Brosnahan and Debbie Goodlet who appeared for Randle. Judge Mahony remanded Randle in custody to appear again on Friday, March 4 at 2.15pm.

A woman supporter in the public gallery called to Randle as he was led away. “I’ll try and ring you tomorrow, Shane,” she said.

Randle’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse before and after his appearance.

Two family members obstructed TV cameramen as they tried to film Randle’s arrival.
